Troy Coulterman crafts three-dimensional human figures in seductive colours, with exaggerated features and forms that are directly influenced from graphic novels. Absurd, abstract forms engulf, drip and extrude from the figures he creates.
These forms that surround or become part of the figures are visual metaphors of absurd anomalies and emotional states the characters he creates are experiencing. It always starts with the figure and the figure is always in some way interacting with these forms.
Inspired by artists who made their mark in the comic book scene, including Daniel Clowes and Jamie Hewlett, Coulterman’s resin figures are like graphic novel characters in 3-D.
Coulterman hails from Arnprior, Ontario, and is a graduate of the University of Regina MFA program, majoring in sculpture. His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions and he has had solo exhibitions in Toronto, Portland, San Diego, and Regina.
