Sonia Kolner is a creature of the night who is influenced by old school Japanese art, music and her relationships with others.
“I’ve always found it easier to connect with others on a deeper level when darker emotions were brought to the surface. I use my art to show there is no light without the dark.
Someone reacted to my work by saying “I’ve suffered through depression and it sucks, but your pieces put me at ease.” One of the reasons why I make the work that I do, is knowing that others relate to the vulnerability, yet find comfort. I like the quiet exchange.”
Sonia Kolner was born and raised in Singapore, but spent most of her life in Zurich, Switzerland. She resides and works in Oakland, and is a recent graduate from California College of the Arts with a BFA in Illustration.
