Artist filmmaker Andrew Thomas Huang lives and works in Los Angeles. He studied Fine Art and Animation at the University of Southern California, graduating in 2007.
His work “Solipsist” is a 10-minute experimental short film inspired by the philosophical idea of Solipsism. The film is a rich audiovisual experience exploring themes of consciousness and convergence across three beautifully surreal stories, connected to one another through a vivid technicolour palette and transfixing visual effects.
Andrew used mostly practical techniques to create the effect of characters physically united by prismatic feathers, puppeteered beings hovering underwater and human characters disintegrating into spectral clouds of sand.
“Solipsist” premiered at Slamdance 2012, where it was awarded the Special Jury Prize for Experimental Shorts, and it was selected for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase at the 2012 Cannes Lions.
As an experimental filmmaker whose work bridges the gap between video art and film, he has developed a strong reputation for his collaborative practice with a diverse mix of artists, including highly acclaimed projects with Icelandic musician Bjork, among others.
Huang has recently shown solo and collaborative work at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC; MoMA PS1; The Barbican Centre, London and The Museum of Contemporary Art, LA.
