The PhotoPhore is a proud partner of PARALELL VIENNA 2016, a satellite fair and curated exhibition that remains true to its principle of using abandoned property in the city centre as a presentation platform for contemporary art. It’s taking place for the forth time in Vienna parallel to viennacontemporary.
PARALELL VIENNA chooses galleries, artists and curators and additionally invites project spaces which fit into the overall concept. PARALELL VIENNA pools the urban forces of contemporary art production and offers an insight into different scenes, communities and areas of Vienna.
PARALLEL VIENNA 2016 will take place between the 21st – 25th of September in Alte Post in the first district. “The goal is to place more of the Austrian art production in an international context, where more potential for contemporary artists exists. On one hand, young artists miss galleries and on the other hand there’s not enough space for young positions. This is a deficit that PARALLEL VIENNA wants to point out and to once again efficiently counteract with high artistic standards”, says Stefan Bidner, artistic director of PARALLEL VIENNA.
PARALELL VIENNA presents young and aspiring as well as established artistic works and collects art initiatives of every kind – art associations, galleries, project spaces, curated project spaces and artist spaces – all under one roof. Additionally, in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Chancellery, 10 independent international curators from Croatia, Denmark, Albania, Lithuania, Romania, Greece, Georgia, Germany and USA are invited to curate their own rooms.
Last year, PARALLEL VIENNA had more than 13.000 visitors and it’s on the way to establish itself as an important part in the international art scene. In total this year, over 400 artistic positions are shown on 7000 m². Participation is only possible with invitation by the PARALLEL VIENNA team. Among highlights of this year is Gelitin’s performance “Human Elevator”, presented by Land Niederösterreich at the opening on the 20th of September.
Institutional partners for the first time this year are also the City of Vienna with MUSA as well as Land Salzburg/Kunst im Traklhaus. PARALLEL VIENNA presents a performative screening with Hermann Nitsch and site specific interventions, such as one from Ona B. Young and established photographers will be exhibited in a special photography exhibition curated by Elfie Semotan und Stefan Bidner. Every afternoon and evening at the fair there’ll be artist talks, panels and performances.
