The installation “Mass” by Ron Mueck, features 100 monumental hand-cast skulls, each of which measure 1.5m and collectively weigh approximately 5 tonnes.
The work has been especially commissioned for the Blockbuster Summer Exhibition, the inaugural NGV Triennial (Melbourne, Australia), a free exhibition, taking over the entire gallery and featuring the world’s best art and design.
The skulls are piled up on the gallery floor, each which engage with the architecture of the site.
Beginning December 15, 2017, the inaugural National Gallery of Victoria Triennial will open its doors to the work of over 100 creatives from 32 countries, until April 15, 2018.
With this monumental and immersive installation inspired by the bones of the catacombs of Paris, Ron Mueck questions the themes of identity and impermanence, but also the notion of eternity present in all cultures and religions.
