COREY HELFORD GALLERY (Los Angeles) presents “Children on the Edge”, an exhibition of all new works by Japanese painter Hikari Shimoda, featuring a sparkling installation by Australian based artist Pip & Pop. Also opening the same night in Gallery 2 – “East/West”, showcasing the gallery’s Asian contemporary artists, brought together with Western artists.
The starry-eyed, magical girls and boys at the center of Hikari Shimoda’s paintings have become synonymous with the Nagano, Japan based artist’s work.
Poised as spiritual deities or the extraordinary superheroes of popular culture, they represent hope for salvation of a dying modern world – a netherworld bursting with problems as humanity struggles to cope with its imminent demise.
With her fourth major solo exhibition, “Children on the Edge”, Shimoda both humanizes and expands on the mythology of her young characters in a series of seventeen new paintings. Accompanying the paintings will be an elaborate and extensive installation by world-renowned Pip & Pop.
