“I try to make my work with elegance and humour and courage to be and think differently, exploring these stylistic attribution in everyday life without over intellectualising them.”
Born in Cologne, Germany, Catrine Val started her career in Vienna, Austria working within commercial advertising design, but then left this to study fine art at Kunsthochschule in Kassel, Germany. After graduating, she worked for 6 years as teaching assistant of Bjørn Melhus in the field of virtual reality, further developing her artistic position.
Her series FEMINIST is “most definitely not merely post-feminist self-adulation set in a private microcosm; rather, […] the endless reproduction of woman and her edgy efforts to present herself anew daily unmask the battle for supremacy between authenticity and theatricality.”
In the project Philosophers, the artist examines the loss of connection to nature in our modern, technically driven world: “art’s role changes in a world suffused with generated images […]. In these rapidly changing times, modern life has become far-removed from anything resembling authenticity or truth.
Val has exhibited widely across Europe and in Taiwan. In 2012, she was shortlisted for the Renaissance Photography prize and was also a runner-up for the Kaunas Photo Star Prize. Her project FEMINIST was made in to a hardback book, published in 2012 by Kehrer, Germany and was nominated for the German Fotobuchpreis 2013.
