Yasam Sasmazer‘s artistic oeuvre investigates all aspects of humanity. Her sculptures depict the good as well as the bad, the darkness and light that characterise the human condition.
Her wooden and bronze sculptures represent slightly larger-than-life figures of children and young adults, along with shadow figures as in the “Dark Twin” series. Sasmazer lives and works, both literally and symbolically, between Istanbul and Berlin, and her works are influenced by both cities with their divergent cultures and rhythms.
She touches upon and sheds light on the role of women in both societies, as well as on the alleged innocence of children who, especially in the contemporary metropolis, are perhaps not as harmless as we sometimes pretend to like and think. No longer guiltless children, but also not disenchanted adults, Sasmazer‘s figures are ambivalent and thus act as psychological objects of projection for our own self-perception.
Yaşam Şaşmazer studied sculpture at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts in Istanbul. Her works can be found in exhibitions, biennials and collections in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Köln, München, Bilbao, Madrid, Rome, Paris, London, New York, Chicago, Istanbul and Dubai. The artist lives and works in Istanbul and Berlin.
