Hsiao-Ron Cheng is a Taiwanese digital artist/illustrator. She started to work as a freelance illustrator in 2012 and soon get international attention. Her work has been shortlisted for Young Illustrator Award and her clients range from fashion brand to design agencies worldwide.
Cheng’s work alludes to the deformation that physically separates children from plants and animals. The environments and situations that she paints are often of surrealist nature, reminiscent of school, and partly based on phantasy.
Her aim is to create more complex worlds with complicated stories of childlike and cruel creatures, showing different kinds of the “fragile and oppressive anima” in life.
“Most of my personal works are half experimental. I’m always trying to explore more possibilities in my illustration skills, style or ideas so I’m able to contribute the specialness back to my clients.”
Cheng’s work is reflective of the hybrid place that is Taiwan. “Our culture combines Chinese with Japanese and Western culture nowadays. The city I live in likes to keep the ancient things and also welcome the fresh; it’s a tiny place mix of old and new… this phenomenon sometimes affects my aesthetic creation.”
