Artist José Luis Torres has set up his public art piece “Overflows” in Quebec City’s Old Port, as part of “Les Passages Insolites“ (The Unusual Passages) festival.
Following up on his successful 2014 “Stock in Transit”, Torres is back with a large-scale installation. “Overflows” bursts as an explosion of colors into the space. Seeing this multitude of colorful objects from their familiar environments inside shipping containers, visitors are faced with the notions of expansion and excess.
The work with its vivid colors is quickly perceived as seducing and playful. However, there is something disturbing about it, as if it held a potential threat. The excessive accumulation of plastic overflows from the installation and increases the feeling of insecurity.
José Luis Torres was born in Argentina and has a Bachelor’s Degree in visual arts, a Master’s Degree in sculpture and training in architecture and integrating art with architecture. He has been living and working in Quebec since 2003. His work has been showcased in many solo and group exhibitions, in public interventions and artist residencies in Canada, Argentina, the United States, Mexico and Europe.
“Les Passages Insolites” 2015 event gathers professional visual artists and architecture collectives from Quebec and from France. Its twelve-site circuit unravels intriguing short-lived installations. These Passages Insolites intend to take the public off beaten trails by producing unusual, surprising encounters and a unique way to experience the city.
